- Pass six of your seven topics.
- Achieve at least 40% in your native language.
- Get at least 50% on all four subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
- Get at least 30% in two additional subjects.
You must speak either English or Afrikaans as one of your languages if you plan to continue your education after high school. This is due to the fact that higher education is taught in either English or Afrikaans.
Admission Points Score (APS)
Each institution or university of technology has its own minimal entry criteria in addition to these ones. You must submit your grades when you apply to a university because this is how your acceptance into certain programs will be determined. Your grades will be translated to an APS score. To verify the APS requirements, go to the university website.
The point allocation is as follows:
- 80% – 100% = 7 points
- 70% – 79% = 6 points
- 60% – 69% = 5 points
- 50% – 59% = 4 points
- 40% – 49% = 3 points
- 30% – 39% = 2 points
- 0% – 29% = 1 point
Your APS score is the result of adding together all of your points. The maximum score you can receive is 42. For undergraduate requirements, theses must meet the following APS minimum scores:
- Higher Certificate – 15 points
- Diploma – 18 points
- Bachelor’s Degree – 21+ points (depending of the qualification)
Which marks are assessed for APS?
Your matriculation grades are evaluated in accordance with the institution’s particular course criteria. On the other hand, an institution might conditionally accept you depending on your Grade 11 grades. This means that the grades you submitted for matric must be on par with or higher than the grades you submitted for Grade 11.
Which subjects/marks are used?
This will depend on the university and course you are applying for.
