About Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT)
Founded in 1958 by Late Harry Oppenheimer in remembrance of his father, Sir Ernest, the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust has been striving towards creating a positive difference in South Africa by contributing to different public interest cases, education, and other philanthropic causes in South Africa.
Oppenheimer Memorial Trust has various Awards, Grant Programmes, and Scholarships under its name. These include Scholarships for Undergraduate Studies, Scholarships for Local Postgraduate Studies, Scholarships for International Postgraduate Studies, Awards for Sabbatical Studies, The Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship Award, and Grant to Public Benefit Organization. These are awarded strictly based on merit according to the guidelines set by the committee.
Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Scholarships 2023
Oppenheimer Memorial Trust is urging students to apply for Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Scholarships for the upcoming academic year.
OMT provides three types of scholarships, i.e.,
- OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate Local Studies (covering Postgraduate at Masters and Doctoral Level at an accredited and recognized South African educational Institution)
- OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate International Studies (covering Postgraduate at Masters and Doctoral Level at an International educational institution)
- OMT Scholarship for Sabbatical Studies (covering studies at Public High Educational in South Africa)
The Scholarships do not provide full coverage and therefore, students have to find alternate sources of financial assistance. The scholarships are renewed each year based on the candidate’s academic performance.
For the Postgraduate Local and International Studies, Master and Postgraduate students will receive two years of funding and Ph.D. students for three years.

Eligibility Criteria
The committee for Scholarship has certain eligibility criteria that candidates should essentially comply by
- The candidate should be a South African citizen or a permanent resident of the country.
- The applicant must be studying towards postgraduate qualification (candidates should not apply if they already hold a degree at the same level)
- The applying candidate should be looking at an accredited and recognized educational institution in South Africa (For OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate Local Studies)
- The applicant must be studying towards an advanced course that is not available in South Africa from an internationally recognized educational institution. They must possess an excellent academic record and should have the intention to pursue a career required for the betterment of South Africa (For the OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate International Studies)
- The candidate must be full-time pursuing sabbatical studies from a Public High Education Institution in South Africa. Applicants with proven years of research and teaching will be given preference. (For OMT Scholarship for Sabbatical Studies)

There is no application form for the Scholarships, but candidates have to submit the documents via email as follows.

The email subject line should bear “OMT Scholarship Application- (Your Name).” If you need to send your application through two emails because of a large document size, the information should be mentioned in the email.
Documents Required
You have to submit the following documents to be considered eligible for the Scholarships.
- Certified copies of permanent residence permit/ ID documents
- Latest Photograph (3cm × 4cm)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Completed academic transcripts (completed or currently studying)
- Certified copies of degree certificates
- Acceptance/ registration proof, preferably on the institution’s letterhead.
- Details of the study you wish to pursue.
- The estimated annual expense of the study (recorded on OMT Study Budget Template)
- Details of other funding applied to
- A signed motivational letter stating your personal background, interests, personal philosophy, schooling, your priorities and plans, and career goals in a maximum of 500 words.
- Income proof
- 3 recommendation proof from individuals who are well acquainted with your study and work plans and attest to your achievements.
- A motivational letter informing why you have chosen your field of research, how it can help South Africa, expected outcomes, potential benefits, and your position after the sabbatical in a maximum of 500 words (For OMT Scholarship for Sabbatical Studies)
- Confirmation of sabbatical and synopsis of 2-3 best of your publications (For OMT Scholarship for Sabbatical Studies)

- For OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate Local Studies: 30th September 2022
- For OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate International Studies: 31st January 2023
- For OMT Scholarship for Sabbatical Studies: 31st March 2023
Applicants submitted post the scholarship committee will reject the given deadline.
