About Eskom
Eskom is a public utility company in South Africa that is currently one of the leading electricity providers. Founded as Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM) in 1923 as per the Electricity Act, it is generating almost 95% of South Africa’s electricity.
The company has a number of power plants, including the Koeberg nuclear power station and Kendal power station. The latter is the largest coal-powered electricity generation plant in Africa and the 22nd largest in the world. Eskom is also a publicly-traded company and listed in JSE as BIESKM.
Eskom Bursaries 2024
Eskom is offering bursaries to a certain number of students every year in the field of engineering. This is to encourage more students to take up the engineering streams and realise their full potential. Besides that, the bursary programme is also an attempt to improve the South African labor market. The sector is evergreen, bright, and growing. More skilled professionals would be needed in the future.
For the upcoming academic session, Eskom is awarding bursaries to students for the upcoming academic year in the following fields of study:
For University studies:
- Chemical Engineering (B Eng / BSc)
- Civil Engineering (B Eng / BSc)
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) (B Eng / BSc)
- Electrical Engineering (Light Current) (B Eng / BSc)
- Mechanical Engineering (B Eng / BSc)
- Mechatronics Engineering (B Eng / BSc)
For University of Technology studies:
- Chemical Engineering (Diploma)
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) (Diploma)
- Electrical Engineering (Light Current) (Diploma)
- Mechanical Engineering (Diploma)
The value of the bursary will depend on the course fees and other expenses. Based on the estimate, Eskom will provide the funding.
Eligibility Criteria For The Eskom Bursary
There are specific eligibility criteria for the Eskom bursary programme. Students applying for the funding must fulfill all of them to be considered. Failing to meet any of the requirements will result in the immediate cancellation of your application. Therefore, always cross-check with the below criteria before applying.
For University studies:
- A South African Citizen
- Must be currently in Matric in 2023
- Must have achieved a minimum of Level 4 for English, in Grade 11 finals
- Must have achieved a minimum of Level 5 for Pure Mathematics, in Grade 11 finals
- Must have achieved a minimum of Level 5 for Physical Science, in Grade 11 finals
- Intend on studying towards one of the qualifications listed above in 2024
- Must have received conditional acceptance to study at a recognised and accredited University in South Africa
- NOT be in receipt of any other bursary funding and must NOT be registered at any tertiary institution
- Preference may be given to applicants from under-represented designated groups (in line with Eskom’s employment equity plan and its employment equity goals and targets)
For University of Technology studies:
- A South African Citizen
- Must be currently in Matric in 2023
- Must have achieved a minimum of Level 4 for English, in Grade 11 finals
- Must have achieved a minimum of Level 4 for Pure Mathematics, in Grade 11 finals
- Must have achieved a minimum of Level 4 for Physical Science, in Grade 11 finals
- Intend on studying towards one of the qualifications listed above in 2024

For the bursary, students with disabilities will be preferred over other applicants. Moreover, students from underrepresented designated groups will also get priority.

The forms will ask you for specific details about yourself, your contact details, and your academic details. Read through the instructions before filling in the details.
Selected candidates will be informed within 28 days of the closing of the bursary. If the candidate does not receive any information regarding their application, then their application can be considered unsuccessful.
Documents Required
The next step is to prepare the documents necessary for this bursary. These are required for verification purposes and to further process your application. Failing to submit these will result in cancellation. Here are the forms you’d have to upload to the online application portal:
- Certified copy of ID documents
- Certified copy of your grade 11 final results
- Certified copy of matric latest results
- University registration proof on the university’s letterhead
