Samancor Chrome Bursary 2024

About Samancor Chrome

Samancor Chrome was established in 1975 due to the merging of two entities viz. SA Manganese Ltd and Amcor Ltd. SA Manganese came into being in the year 1926 and mined manganese ore deposits across the Northern Cape. On the other hand, Amcor Ltd was formed in 1937 to exploit mineral deposits and process the same into ferroalloys for the steel industry.

Today, Samancor Chrome Holding Proprietary Limited is a 100% shareholder of Samancor Chrome Limited. The shareholding consists of chrome mining assets, ferrochrome smelting assets as well as other smelting assets.

South Africa contributes nearly 30% of ferrochrome demand worldwide. Ferrochrome is the main component required to produce stainless steel- which generally contains 8% nickel and 18% chrome. The chrome ingredient is what gives the stainless steel its shine, lustre, and corrosion resistance.

South Africa’s ferrochrome production consumes over 90% of Samancor Chrome’s chrome ore output. The remaining ore output is exported.

The main business of the company is mining and smelting of chrome ore. Due to its annual capacity of 2.4 million tons of ferrochrome, Samancor Chrome is the largest integrated producer of ferrochrome worldwide. The corporate office of the company is based in Sandton, Johannesburg. It operates a total of six ferrochrome plants and two chrome ore mining complexes strategically located in different regions of South Africa.
