Founded in 1950 in Sasolburg, South Africa, Sasol is one of the first coal-to-oil companies. Sasol is a global company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), in the United States and Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), in South Africa.

Sasol is made up of two businesses: Energy and Chemical. The energy business consists of Gas, Liquid Fuels, and Mining providing unique solutions to mobility and energy problems. The energy business is responsive to the changing global trends by providing growth renewables and gas and developing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase revenue for the country. On the other hand, the chemical business meets the base and performance chemical of the growing urbanization of South Africa.

Sasol is inviting students to apply for their bursaries in the upcoming academic year. Bursaries will be provided to postgraduate and undergraduate studies in the following fields

    • Industrial Engineering (BEng / BSc)
    • Mechanical Engineering (BEng / BSc)
    • Geology (BEng / BSc)
    • Electrical Engineering (BEng / BSc)
    • Electronic Engineering (BEng / BSc)
  • Undergraduate Studies (At the University of Technology)
    • Mine Surveying (BEng Tech)
    • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Instrumentation & Control Engineering (Electrical Light Current)
  • Postgraduate Studies
    • Chemical Engineering (Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical and Statistical Modelling, Process Modelling, Reactor Technology, Separation Technology, Thermodynamics)
    • Chemistry (advanced analytical Chemistry, Catalysis or Polymer Science, Environmental Science in the areas of Water, Waste)
    • Cyber Security (MSc / PhD/ MEng)
    • Data Science (Applied Mathematics, Statistics)

The Sasol South African Mainstream Bursary provides developmental and financial support throughout the study period.

The bursary will cover the expenses of registration fees, tuition fees, meal allowance, accommodation allowance, books, pocket money, calculator, and calculator allowance (once-off). Selected candidates will receive opportunities for vacation work after 2nd or 3rd year of study and also receive support programs and workshops, including student discussions, EAP- employee assistance program.

Shortlisted students completing undergraduate studies at the University of Technology, they will be able to complete practical training at Sasol. For postgraduate students, the bursary will cover research costs and provide access to Sasol’s technical mentors.

The Mainstream Bursary includes a service contract that requires shortlisted candidates to complete their work obligations based on the company’s needs. Through graduate development programs, bursary recipients can be employed within the Sasol Group.

Candidates will be selected based on an online assessment, including an interview and psychometric tests.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates have to suffice the following criteria to be considered eligible for the bursary programme.

  • The candidate must be a South African citizen
  • Applicant must have completed matric or currently completing Matric
  • The applying candidate must intend to study full-time in the fields mentioned in an accredited and recognized educational institution in South Africa
  • For BSc and BEng students, you have to a minimum of Level 6 in Mathematics and Physical Science, Level 5 in English (first additional language or Home language), or Level 4 in English (second additional language)
  • For Hons and undergraduate students, one has to obtain a minimum of 50% in all courses
  • Students who have extended study periods are not eligible to apply
  • For Undergraduate students at the University of Technology, you have to obtain a minimum of Level 5 in Mathematics, Science, and English
  • For postgraduate students, one has to obtain a minimum of 65% and have completed one of the following courses ( BSc in Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Statistics, and B. Eng in Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electronic Engineering)
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • No criminal records should be observed

  • Certified copy of ID document
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate
  • Complete academic results and transcripts, preferably on institutions’ letterheads

Closing Date

The closing date for Sasol South African Mainstream Bursary 2023 is 23 May 2023 at 16:00. Applications submitted post the given deadline will not be considered by the bursary panel.
