About Thungela

Thungela Resources Limited is a prominent producer and exporter of the finest quality thermal coal across South Africa. In the isiZulu language, Thungela means to “ignite”. It was formed when South Africa’s thermal coal operations were separated from Anglo-American and in June 2021 was listed on the LSE and JSE.

The company is a reasonably new miner that mainly produces its thermal coal from 7 coal mines in the Mpumalanga province, South Africa, with high calorific value.

Thungela exports its thermal coal mainly to markets in India, SEA, Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. The company aims to create value for the South African community, drive the economy and build a sustainable future for the coming generations.

As of December 2020, Thungela has up to 7525 employees and individual contractors. Apart from this, Thungela partners with third-party service providers as well. The company executes all its operations as per social, environmental, and governance (ESG) programs.

Thungela Resources Limited may be a new company in the mining industry, but its foundation and legacy in coal mining go way back in the year 1945. It is a future-driven thermal coal company that is highly focused on creating value for not just stakeholders but also South African society and communities.

The company efficiently conducts climate risk management, and land stewardship, along with promoting biodiversity and efficiently using the resources including energy and water. Along with this, Thungela also focuses on reducing waste generation and being careful of their operations’ impact on air quality.

Thungela Bursary 2024

Thungela invites young talent and top students who wish to be a part of Thungela- a leading thermal coal exporter and producer in South Africa. Thungela offers practical experience and financial assistance to the youth of South Africa to help them meet the requirements in their mining-related studies.

Students in their 1st or 2nd year of studies in the following fields can apply:

• Mining Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Geology
• Environmental Engineering
• Electrical Engineering

Students who are passionate about their field of study and have a clear vision of their future careers are welcome to join hands with Thungela Resources Limited.

Eligibility Criteria

Students willing to apply for the Thungela Bursary 2024 must abide by the following criteria:

• Must be a South African citizen
• Applicants must be in their 1st or 2nd year of studies in 2024
• Must be studying at an accredited and recognized tertiary institution in South Africa
• Must be an Employment Equity Candidate
• Must be a top student
• Must be a student of either:

Documents Required

Students applying for the Thungela Bursary must attach the following documents along with the online bursary application:

• Certified copy of the ID
• Certified Copy of Matric Certificate
• If studying currently, full academic transcripts/records (certified copy)
• Certified copy of Parent’s or Guardian’s proof of income

  • If employed, the latest pay slips
  • If applicable, proof of grant or pension

Closing Date

The application deadline is 31 July 2023.
