About JSE
JSE, or Johannesburg Stock Exchange, is the world’s 19th largest stock market exchange and the largest stock exchange in South Africa. The market cap of JSE is around $1,282 billion. It was established in 1887 during the gold rush period in South Africa, making it the oldest stock exchange on the African continent.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange operates a fund that aims to empower disadvantaged students in the country. Known as the JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF), it provides funding to students who cannot pursue their education due to a lack of financial means.

Eligibility Criteria For The JSE Empowerment Fund
There are specific eligibility criteria for the JSE Empowerment Fund bursary. These are defined by JSE to select candidates from a large pool of applicants. Since the number of applicants always outnumbers the amount of funding available, JSE can’t award the bursaries to everyone. Failing to meet any of the criteria will result in immediate rejection. Therefore, always cross-check before applying to avoid rejection.
The eligibility requirements for JSE Empowerment Fund Bursary are:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must have completed Matriculation
- Must be pursuing a degree in one of the fields of study mentioned above.
- You must be studying at one of the Universities mentioned above.
- Must be in the second, third, or fourth year of study or Postgraduate (Honours) level of study
- Must be studying full-time and not part-time
- Must have a strong academic track record
- For undergraduate students: you must have achieved a minimum overall average of 60%
- For postgraduate students: you must have achieved a minimum overall average of 60%

Fulfilling all the requirements, however, doesn’t guarantee funding. Students who belong to a designated group and come from a previously disadvantaged background will get preference over others.
