About Labour Market Intelligence (LMI)

The Labour Market Intelligence Partnership (LMIP), led by the Human Sciences Research Council, was launched by the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation in 2012 as the first phase of a labour market intelligence research programme. In conjunction with the Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) at UCT, the second phase of the Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) research programme began in 2019.

The LMI research programme is a five-year multi-stakeholder project supported by the National Skills Fund (NSF) to create a credible institutional system for skills planning.

Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) Bursary 2022

Students are invited to apply for the Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) research programme, which is run by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in collaboration with the Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), for the 2023 academic year. The DHET, in collaboration with the DPRU, a university-accredited research unit within the School of Economics at UCT, is implementing the bursary.

The bursary is for the Masters and PhD students who wish to elaborate their knowledge in the field of Labour Market Intelligence. Applicants must aim to pursue qualitative or quantitative research in the labour market and skills development in general. The candidate must be pursuing a degree in any of the following fields:

  • Economics
  • Post-secondary education
  • Sociology
  • Or a similar discipline

The bursary will be provided to four recipients (2-masters & 2-PhD) and will cover the following:

  • Cost of tuition during the whole course.
  • R80 000 per year

Eligibility Criteria For The Bursary

The candidates must check the eligibility criteria before applying for the scholarship. There should not be any exceptions.

  • The candidate must hold South African citizenship.
  • The candidate must have been enrolled for a postgraduate level degree (Masters or PhD) for the year 2023.
  • The candidate must have been enrolled for the course in any of the following institutions:
    • University of Cape Town
    • University of the Western Cape
    • Stellenbosch University
    • University of KwaZulu-Natal
    • Rhodes University, University of the Witwatersrand
    • University of Fort Hare
    • University Limpopo
    • University of Venda
    • Walter Sisulu University
    • University of Zululand
    • Mangosuthu University of Technology
    • Sefako Makgatho Health Science University
  • The candidate must have completed their graduation by the time funding ends (December 31 2024)
  • The candidates must not hold any other degree of the post-graduate level previously.
  • The candidate must not be a recipient of any funding from NSFAS or NRF.
  • The candidate must not be a recipient of any funding from any governmental organisation.
  • The candidates who have the following skills will be given preference:
    • Good English Language skills (speaking and writing).
    • Exceptional research record.
    • possess the necessary analytical and empirical abilities
    • Possess the ability to do the research independently including study and implementation.
  • African candidates, candidates with disabilities and Female candidates will be given preference.

Documents Required

All the mentioned documents must be attached to the application form without any exceptions. If any document is missing, the application will not be accepted:

  • Complete the LMI Bursary cover sheet and checklist. Click here for the pdf.
  • An application letter with the following:
    • Describe the experiences and interests of the candidate regarding research.
    • Elaborate on the topic of the research and how it is relevant?
    • How the candidate plans on pursuing the research?
    • How it will be useful to the sector.
    • It should not be more than two pages.
  • A well-devised curriculum vitae.
  • Academic records and transcripts.
  • Example of written work. It should not be more than 5 pages.
  • Contact details (names and email) of two referees who have been part of any research by the candidate.

Closing Date Of The Bursary

The applications will be closed on 31 July 2022. All the candidates must complete their application by then as no late submissions will be accepted.
