About MEXT

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology is a ministry in Japan that was founded on January 6, 2001. It is among the eleven ministries that form the executive division of the government of Japan. Its mission is to enhance the relationships of Japan with other countries.

MEXT Scholarship

MEXT is offering students a scholarship to study in Japan. The students can apply for undergraduate/training/Ph.D./masters. The scholarship offers the following benefits:

  • Monthly stipend and preparatory allowance.
  • Cost of tuition and entrance examination.
  • Cost of travel. It includes the air travel costs from the candidate’s country to Japan.
  • Accommodation is arranged by the university.
  • Only the following courses are available:
    • GIBS Business School
    • Faculty of Humanities
    • Faculty of Law
    • Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and IT
    • Faculty of Education
    • Faculty of Veterinary Science
    • Faculty of Health Science
    • Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
    • Faculty of Economics and Management Science
    • Faculty of Theology and Religion

Eligibility Criteria

The candidates must check the eligibility criteria for the scholarship before applying. There should not be any exceptions.

  • Only the candidates from the following SADEC countries can apply:
    • South Africa (Postgraduate and Undergraduate)
    • Lesotho (Postgraduate)
    • Eswatini (Postgraduate)
  • The candidate must be fluent in English.
  • The candidate must not be a citizen of Japan.
  • For Undergraduates: (South Africa)
    • The candidate must not be more than 25 years of age.
    • The candidate must have completed 12 years of education or a course equivalent to high school.

  • For postgraduates/PhD: ( Eswatini, South Africa and Lesotho)
    • The candidate must not be more than 35 years old and have a graduate-level qualification or its equivalent education of 16-18 years.

  • For Specialised Training college students: (South Africa)
    • The candidate must be under 25 years old.
    • The candidate must have completed schooling of 12 years or a course equivalent to Japanese High School.

How to apply?

The applicants must submit the application form available at the embassy website here.

Applicants need to hand-deliver or courier the hard copies of the below-mentioned documents at the following address:

Documents Required

The documents mentioned must be submitted to the Japanese embassy.

  • Completed application form for the scholarship.
  • The highest qualification certificate is validated with stamps. The degree or diploma must be translated into English. Make sure you fulfill the eligibility for your preferred level of study.
  • Two letters of recommendation by the candidate’s professors employer or mentor who can validate the academic and research potential of the candidate. It must be in English.
  • A scanned copy of the passport, if available.
  • A well-defined Curriculum Vitae.
  • Recent photographs.
  • Plan of study written by the candidate that should describe their motivation, academic background, etc., applicable for research students.
  • Documents validating the English language skills of the candidate.
  • Publications and thesis, applicable for research students.
  • Any reference document, if available.
