Rhodes University is one of the leading public research universities in South Africa. Established in 1904, the institution is based in Makhanda on the Eastern Cape Province. The campus has enrolled over 8000 students, and boasts one of the most successful graduation rates in the region.

Rhodes University’s six faculties consist of 44 departments that offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. One of the tertiary institution’s main objectives is to provide quality education to underprivileged students in the country. The university has partnered with a number of organizations around the globe to provide financial support for students in different courses.

Global Partnership Network Masters Scholarships 2021

The Global Partnership Network (GPN) is an international center of excellence with academic interests around the world. The organization is based in Germany, and has developed multiple partnerships with universities in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. GPN has partnered with Rhodes University to create the Global Partnership Network Masters Scholarships in Partnership in Development Cooperation, the Global Economy and Knowledge Production.

This bursary covers research conducted on the global economy, development cooperation and knowledge production. Candidates applying for this funding should be interested in pursuing an analysis on the following topics:

  • Post-development in relation to Africa
  • The politics involved with NGO work
  • Alternative knowledge production in relation to Africa

All of the topics mentioned above fit broadly within the scope of GPN’s interests. The scholarship is provided to candidates for a maximum of two years, and stands at R105, 000 per annum.

Rhodes University GPN Master’s Scholarship Application and Requirements

Each candidate will be expected to meet the minimum requirements related to this bursary to qualify for consideration. Failure to meet these criteria will result in immediate disqualification. Those who wish to apply for this bursary will need:

  • An Honor’s degree in Politics and International Studies (or a closely related field)
  • A sufficient passing grade from the previous degree

Applicants from countries located in the Global South (including South Africa) will be given priority, as per GPN scholarship qualification requirements.

Applicants will need to contact the Rhodes University program coordinator of this bursary (Professor Sally Mathews) at s.matthews@ru.ac.za with the following documents before deadline day:

  • A certified copy of your ID
  • A brief curriculum vitae
  • Certified academic records
  • A recent sample of your academic writing
  • A brief research proposal (not more than 1000 words)

Candidates shortlisted for this funding will be expected to attend a short interview in January 2021, and be ready to commit to full-time study from March 2021.
