Study Trust Bursaries 2023

StudyTrust was founded in June 1974 to address unequal educational opportunities. It has partnered with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) which enabled StudyTrust to offer loans to financially needy students as a supplement to partial bursaries.

StudyTrust currently manages bursary funds for providers such as AVI Limited, Aurora Wind Power, Coronation Fund Managers, the FNB Fund, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Hewlett Packard Inc., Hitachi Data Systems, Imalivest, Industrial Corporation, Investec Bank, JvR Africa, Old Mutual Investment Group, Oracle, Pick n Pay, Pioneer Foods, Prudential Portfolio Managers, Rand Merchant Bank, Solar Capital De Aar, Standard Bank and Tourvest.

Since 2012, StudyTrust has provided mentors and support programs to Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) bursary holders.

Standard Bank CSI Bursary

In partnership with StudyTrust, Standard Bank offers full cost bursaries to Grade 12 (who will be in their first year of study in 2019) students who have exhibited academic and leadership potential.

Standard Bank CSI Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

  • Excellent academic results with distinctions in Mathematics and Physical Science, if applicable. The basis will be the Grade 11 final results, Grade 12 June results and Grade 12 Pre-lim results. Minimum 70% average and 75% for Mathematics, 70% for Physical Science and 70% for English FAL (or 60% for English HL) are required.
  • Proven financial need
  • Admission to the designated study programmes
  • Preference will be given to applicants in rural and township background

Standard Bank 150 Bursary

Standard Bank 150 Bursary Fund was launched in honor of Standard Bank’s 150th anniversary in 2012. Bursaries will be awarded for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. This bursary provides full-cost sponsorship to support academic excellence for the next generation of African talent and African leaders.

Standard Bank 150 Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

Undergraduate Bursary

  • South African citizen
  • First-year students who require funding for their 2nd year of studies
  • Strong academic results in the fields of commerce, science, engineering, mathematics and technology at preferred institutions
  • Applicants must have achieved an average of 65% and above in the latest examinations (mid-year / June)
  • Full-time students
  • Applicants must meet the entry requirements of the University (preference is given to University of Cape Town, Wits University, the University of Pretoria, Rhodes University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Stellenbosch University, the University of Johannesburg).
  • Applicants will be required to participate in a formal assessment process including but not limited to Psychometric evaluation and interview.

Postgraduate Bursary

  • South African citizen
  • Applicants must register for full-time postgraduate studies.
  • Strong academic results in the fields of commerce, science, engineering, mathematics and technology at our preferred institutions
  • Applicants must meet the entry requirements of the University(preference is given to University of Cape Town, Wits University, the University of Pretoria, Rhodes University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Stellenbosch University, the University of Johannesburg).
  • Applicants will be required to participate in a formal assessment process including but not limited to Psychometric evaluation and interview.
  • Minimum 65% aggregate
  • Full-time students
  • Proven financial need

Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Programme (DAFI) Scholarship

The Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Programme (DAFI/Deutsche Akademische Flüchtlingsinitiative) has been providing scholarships since 1992 to more than 6000 qualified individuals worldwide. This program is financed by the Government of Germany, which has helped refugees pursue higher education.

DAFI scholarship covers annual registration/tuition fees, annual book allowance, monthly allowance to cover basic expenses during a semester.

DAFI scholarships are awarded for one academic year at a time and can be renewed according to scholar’s academic results as well as the availability of funds.

StudyTrust will conduct monitoring for DAFI beneficiaries at least twice every year to observe their academic performances as well as to take appropriate action if needed.

DAFI Scholarship Requirements and Eligibility

  • Valid refugee permit/section 24
  • Secondary school completion with above average results
  • Proven financial need and inability to support tertiary education
  • Below 35 years old for undergraduate studies and below 40 years old for Master’s studies
  • Full time students and already accepted at a public institution
  • Not a holder of any other scholarship or funding programs
  • Applicants with specific need or disability will be given priority
  • Students who discontinued their education due to flight but has proof of previous university/college studies in their country of origin are urged to apply
  • Higher consideration will be given to students who choose shorter and less costly courses (with high chances of employment) from government institutions

Complete the application form and submit as indicated on the form. Supporting documentation such as previous educational records, a copy of valid refugee permit, letter of admission from a government institution will be required to accompany the DAFI application form.

Only qualified shortlisted applicants will be contacted. Shortlisted individuals will be invited for an interview by the panel. List of successful applicants will be made available at the StudyTrust office and other partners’ offices.

Investec Bank CSI Bursary

Investec offers partial bursaries to full-time students who wish to continue their education towards an undergraduate degree in which are relevant to financial services and key industries such as Commerce, Business Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a Commercial LLB.

Investec Bank CSI Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

  • Proven financial need
  • Outstanding academic merit
  • Full-time students pursuing an undergraduate university (academic) degree in:
    • Actuarial Science (only first year students already at university will be
      considered unless studying towards a Business Science degree at UCT)
    • Commerce (Economics, Business Economics, Accounting, Investments and Finance)
    • B Com Informatics
    • B Sc Computer Science
    • B Sc Information Technology
    • Bachelor of Information Technology
    • Bachelor of Information Science
    • Business Science
    • Science and Mathematics

  • Applicants studying Actuarial Science, can apply for the Investec bursary if they will be in their 2nd year of study next year. This opportunity is not for Actuarial Science students going into their 1st year of study next year.
  • First-year Actuarial Science students already at public university
  • Currently in Grade 12 and already have a National Senior certificate with minimum 50% in all of the subjects, with a minimum of 70% in Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and 70% in English

FNB Bursary

The First National Bank Fund Bursary Programme is a partial bursary that provides tertiary education access for qualified but financially disadvantaged students. To cover other expenses cannot be paid by the FNB bursary, students are thus allowed to have other sources of funding through the Financial Aid Office of their university of choice from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

Commerce, Science or Engineering are the accepted fields of study for this bursary programme.

  • Only applicants who have obtained the following marks in the June/ final examination of their Grade 12 year will be considered:

AVI Limited is home to some of South Africa’s most popular brands such as Five Roses, Freshpak, House of Coffees, Frisco, Koffiehuis and Ellis Brown in the Beverages category; Bakers, Pyotts, Baumann’s, Willards and Provita in the Biscuits and Snacks category; I&J in the Frozen Foods category; and Ciro, Lavazza and Douwe Egberts Cafitesse for the Out Of Home market.

The company’s brands range from hot beverages, sweet and savoury biscuits and snacks, frozen convenience foods, out-of-home ranges, personal care products, cosmetics, shoes, accessories and fashion apparel.

AVI believes that it is important to help qualified individuals from the disadvantaged background with financial assistance to support them to continue their tertiary education.

CommerceMarketingEngineering and Food Sciences are the fields of studies considered for this bursary program. AVI sponsors bursary for Undergraduate and National Diploma/B Tech studies at specific universities and institutions. Both the bursary type covers the full cost of educational expenses.

AVI Limited Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

Degree studies in Commerce and Engineering:

  • South African citizens
  • Applicants who wish to study full-time in undergraduate Commerce degrees at the University of Johannesburg, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pretoria University and Marketing and Finance degrees at Wits University.
  • Applicants with an NSC with degree endorsement and at least a level 5 rating (60%) for Mathematics and English First Additional Language or Matric Exemption and a minimum “C” symbol (Higher Grade) for Maths and English or an NSC
  • Applicants who wish to study Mechanical Engineering degrees at the University of Johannesburg, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pretoria University and Wits University.
  • Applicants with an NSC with degree endorsement and at least a level 5 rating (60%) for Mathematics, Physical Science and English First Additional Language or Matric Exemption and a minimum “C” symbol (Higher Grade) for Maths, Science and English
  • Preference will be given to current Grade 12 learners, matriculated applicants waiting for a study opportunity and full-time students in their first year

Diploma studies in Engineering and Food Technology:

  • South African citizens
  • Applicants who wish to study full-time a National Diploma/ B Tech field in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Food Technology studies at the Durban University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology and Vaal University of Technology
  • Applicants with an NSC with diploma endorsement and at least a level 4 rating (50%) for Mathematics, Physical Science and English First Additional Language, or matric exemption and a minimum “D” symbol (Higher Grade) for Maths, Science and English
