About Transport Education Training Authority (TETA)
TETA collaborates with South Africa’s Department of Transport to ensure that trained professionals can work in the country’s sizable transport industry. Every year, TETA offers hundreds of students access to the funding they need to pursue their tertiary studies. Covered fields of study include engineering, transport, business administration, law, and accounting.
TETA also funds student pilots as they acquire their licences. Applicants should check the covered fields as they change according to TETA’s needs analysis. Applicants must be full-time students at a registered higher learning institution and between the ages of 18 and 35. Applicants from previously disadvantaged groups receive bursary preference.
TETA Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
Before applying for the bursary, applicants must first satisfy the minimum criteria. Failure to do so will result in their applications getting disregarded:
- Must be a citizen of South Africa.
- Must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
- Must be currently unemployed
- Must have completed Matric or is currently enrolled in Matric (or an equivalent)
- Must be currently studying or intends to study full-time in one of the fields of study mentioned above.
- Must be currently studying or has registered to study at one of the accredited tertiary institutes including HETs, Accredited Aviation Schools or Accredited Diving Schools.
- For applicants of Commercial Pilot Training, must possess a valid Private Pilot License.
- For applicants of Instrument or Instructor’s Rating, must possess a valid Commercial Pilot License.
- Must have a good academic record with an average of at least 50%.
- Students with disabilities or those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds are highly encouraged to send their applications.
- Must not be currently funded by any other sponsor or TETA programme.
- For Commercial Diving students, must be 18 years old and above, can swim, and can fluently read, write, and understand English.

Applicants must also submit clear copies of the following documents together with their accomplished application form. Failure to submit all of these documents will lead to the application getting disregarded.
- Certified Grade 11/12 Statement of Results/ Matric Certificate
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Certified copy of death certificate (in case of a deceased parent/s);
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant;
- Proof of application for study at an Institution of Higher Learning (including TVETs), diving or flying school (where acceptance letter is not yet received);
- Acceptance letter from Institution of Higher Learning;
TVETs (Previously known as FET Colleges):
- Certified Senior Certificate and intend to study from (N4-N6);
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Certified copy of death certificate; (in case of a deceased parent or guardian);
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed), proof of SASSA grant;
- Proof of application for study at a TVET college (where acceptance letter is not yet received);
- Proof of registration (where applicable);
- Acceptance letter from college;
Undergraduate/Postgraduate:
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified copy of the highest qualification of applicant or official results if applying for 2nd, 3rd or 4th year;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Certified copy of death certificate (in case of a deceased parent);
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant;
- Proof of application, registration or acceptance letter from Institution of Higher Learning;
- Quotations for tuition fees, accommodation, if applicable;
- Financial Statement indicating the status quo of the learners account.
Pilot training (Commercial Pilot License):
- Certified Grade 12 Statement of Results/Matric Certificate
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified copy of a valid Private Pilot License;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Acceptance letter or proof of registration from Aviation school;
- In case of a deceased parent, certified copy of death certificate;
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant;
- Quotations for training costs (compulsory).
Pilot training (Instrument Rating):
- Certified Grade 12 Statement of Results/Matric Certificate;
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified copy of a valid Commercial Pilot License;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Acceptance letter or proof of registration from Aviation school;
- In case of a deceased parent, certified copy of death certificate;
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant;
- Affidavit from the applicant confirming employment status;
- Quotations for training costs (compulsory).
Pilot training (Instructors Rating):
- Certified Grade 12 Statement of Results/Matric Certificate;
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified copy of a valid Commercial Pilot License with Instrument Rating endorsement;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Acceptance letter or proof of registration from Aviation school;
- In case of a deceased parent, certified copy of death certificate;
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant;
- Quotations for training costs (compulsory).
Pilot training –CPL with ATPL Subjects (Frozen ATPL):
- Certified Grade 12 Statement of Results/Matric Certificate;
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified copy of a valid Commercial Pilot License with Instrument and Instructors Rating endorsement;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Acceptance letter or proof of registration from Aviation school;
- In case of a deceased parent, certified copy of death certificate;
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant; and
- Quotations for training costs (compulsory).
Pilot training (ATPL Hour Building):
- Certified Grade 12 Statement of Results/Matric Certificate;
- Certified ID copy of applicant; and
- Certified copy of a valid Commercial Pilot License with Instrument, Instructors Rating and ATPL Subjects
- endorsement.
- Acceptance letter or proof of registration from aviation school;
- In case of a deceased parent, certified copy of death certificate;
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant; and
- Quotations for training costs (compulsory).
Commercial Diving:
- Applicant must be 18 years old or older;
- Certified copy of the highest qualification;
- Certified ID copy of applicant;
- Certified ID copies of parents/guardian;
- Certified copy of death certificate (In case of a deceased parent);
- Must be able to swim;
- Acceptance letter from an accredited Diving School;
- Proof of income (payslip) or an affidavit (if parents are unemployed) or proof of SASSA grant; and
- Quotations for training costs, equipment etc (compulsory).
