Emalahleni Local Municipality Bursary 2024

About Emalahleni Local Municipality

The Emalahleni Local Municipality comprises the towns of eMalahleni, Ogies, Ga-Nala, and Kwa-Guqa. Established in 1903, the town of eMalahleni was named after a white rock near a ridge at a railway station—a vital stopping point for wagons and transport, doubling as a trading post. Presently, eMalahleni faces potential heritage challenges due to new developments.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality derives its name from its association with coal, signifying the “place of coal.” It stands as the most industrialized municipal area in Nkangala (Mpumalanga), characterized by numerous opencast and underground coal mines. This region boasts the highest number of power stations in the country, showcasing its rich mining and industrial heritage through various heritage spots.
