About Ndwedwe Local Municipality

Ndwedwe Local Municipality, situated in KwaZulu-Natal’s iLembe District, is classified as a Category B municipality. It is located on the coast of KwaZulu-Natal and is the largest of the four municipalities in the region.

Even though the municipality is close to urban and economic advancement, underdevelopment, poverty, and disadvantage persist. The area continues to confront continuous issues, as seen by the majority demography consisting of impoverished black farming communities.

Ndwedwe Local Municipality Bursary 2024

The Ndwedwe Local Municipality Bursary was established in memory of the late Solomon Mahlangu, an anti-apartheid African National Congress (ANC) member and freedom fighter from South Africa. The main objective of this bursary is to financially support historically underrepresented people by helping them to pursue careers in municipal roles.

Students are invited to apply for the Ndwedwe Local Municipality Bursary program for the upcoming academic year through the Ndwedwe Local Municipality.

Bursaries will be awarded to students studying within the municipality’s core and support functions if they live in the Ndwedwe Local Municipality (KwaZulu-Natal). These subjects include:

  • Architecture
  • Artisan
  • Civil Engineering
  • Energy Engineering
  • Geology
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Internal Audit and Risk
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mining
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Policy Analyst
  • Town and Regional Planning

The bursary will pay for the following expenses:

  • Registration and tuition fees (up to R50,000)
  • Prescribed textbooks (up to R6,000)

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates need to fulfill the following minimal requirements before applying for the bursary programme. Please be aware that your application will not be accepted if any of the prerequisites are not met:

  • You reside within the Ndwedwe Local Municipality, in KwaZulu-Natal province
  • You must be from a historically disadvantaged background
  • You must be currently in Matric (in 2023) or have completed Matric
  • You must be studying or intend to study within one of the fields of study listed above in 2024
  • You must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old
  • You must be studying or registered to study at an accredited public or private institution in South Africa (University/ University of Technology or TVET College)
  • You must NOT be receiving any other bursary funding or NSFAS
  • Students with a strong academic background or tremendous potential will get preference

Documents Required

Eligible candidates must submit the following documents with their application form for the Ndwedwe Local Municipality Bursary. Applications that lack the necessary documentation will be rejected and not taken into consideration for the bursary programme.

  • Certified copy of ID document
  • Certified copy of latest mid-term results
  • Proof of registration at a South African institution
  • Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae
  • A motivational letter indicating why you have chosen your field of study
  • Evidence of residency, attested to and verified by a Ward Council member
  • Certified copy of parents or guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed/ proof of SASSA grant if applicable/ death certificate if deceased)

Closing Date

The last date of application is 22 December 2023. Please apply before this date to ensure your application is considered. Applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
