UFS Master’s and Doctoral Bursaries 2023

UFS urges students to apply for the Master’s and Doctoral Bursaries.

The programme is known as the Nurturing Emerging Scholars Programme (NESP), which includes a two-year Master’s Scholarship program followed by a year of academic internship at any recognized and accredited South African University. The Program will allow students to complete their Master’s degree from any University of their choice.

They will be granted a scholarship for two years, and a mentor will be provided to guide them through their duration. Candidates will be provided with opportunities to gain and develop research and teaching abilities and gain exposure to international mobility experience. The NESP is open for students pursuing a Master’s in Forensic Science.

For UFS First, Second, and Third-Year Doctoral Bursaries, UFS provides partial tuition fees for students in their second and third year of doctoral studies. The bursary is a once-off, and students who do not have any other funding source will be preferred.

Shortlisted candidates have to participate in workshops for Graduate Support Research Capacity Development. Fees, university registration and living costs are not covered.

Financial assistance is also provided to First and Second-Year Research Master’s students. You can also avail of First and Second-Year Structured Masters Bursaries as well in the upcoming academic year.

Eligibility Criteria

Mentioned below are the eligibility criteria required to participate in the UFS Master’s and Doctoral Bursaries

For NESP Programme

  • Candidates have to be South African citizen with an age limit being 35 years or younger.
  • The applying candidate must obtain a minimum average of 65% in a relevant honors degree.
  • The applicant must be interested in academics and show a strong conviction for placement

For UFS First, Second and Third – Year Doctoral Bursaries

  • Second and third-year students who have submitted their annual reports on GRM, i.e., Graduate Research Management system
  • Applicants must meet all requirements to be a doctoral degree registered at UFS
  • Students should have an assigned internal UFS supervisor

For First-Year Research Master’s Bursaries

  • Applicants must meet all requirements for a master’s degree and be registered at UFS
  • Students should have an assigned internal UFS supervisor

For Second-Year Research Master’s Bursaries

  • Second-year students who have submitted their annual reports on GRM, i.e., Graduate Research Management system
  • Applicants must meet all requirements for a master’s degree and be registered at UFS
  • Students should have an assigned internal UFS supervisor

For UFS First-Year Structured Masters Bursaries

  • Candidate must be a first-year Master’s student
  • Candidates registered for part-time studies, MBA degree, or another degree at the same level are not eligible for the bursaries
  • Bursaries are awarded on a merit-based.
  • Applicants have to obtain a minimum of 65% for all final year subjects (four-year degree), a minimum average of 65% at the honors level, or a minimum of 65% at the postgraduate level
  • Applicants must meet all requirements for a master’s degree with a research component, i.e., mini-dissertation at UFS

For UFS Second-Year Structured Masters Bursaries

  • Second-year structured Masters student with mini-dissertation can apply
  • Students registered for an MBA degree cannot apply
  • Applicants must meet all requirements for a master’s degree with a research component, i.e., mini-dissertation at UFS
  • Students should have an assigned internal UFS supervisor

Documents Required

The following documents should be submitted to be considered eligible for the UFS Master’s and Doctoral Bursaries

  • Acceptance proof of abstract
  • Students applying for the Structured Masters program should submit complete academic transcripts
  • Invitation letter and conference documentation
  • Outline the development plan of the paper for publication
  • A letter outlining the rationale, objectives, and aim of the study
  • Publication proof in an accredited journal
  • Recommendation letter for the supervisor of the student

Closing Date

The closing date for the Bursary Programmes are as follows

  • NESP program: 3rd February 2023
  • First-Year Doctoral Bursaries 2023: 30th September 2023.
  • For the Second and Third – Year Doctoral Bursaries is 28th February 2023
  • For First-Year Research Masters Bursaries: 30th September 2023
  • For Second-Year Research Master’s Bursaries: 28th February 2023
  • For UFS First-Year Structured Masters Bursaries: 28th February 2023
  • For UFS Second-Year Structured Masters Bursaries: 28th February 2023
