UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary

UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary 2024

The UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary aims to help UNISA International and South African students in their research activities and tuition fees so they can easily accomplish their degrees. This is subject to the availability of funds, eligibility, and students’ academic performance.

The UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary will cover allowance for Research Essentials and Tuition fees for 2 consecutive years. (Refer to Frequently Asked Questions to know more about research allowance). This is subject to second-year re-application being approved.

  • Master’s Degree by Coursework: Will cover tuition fees and research allowance up to R 25 000 over the first 2 consecutive years.
  • Master’s Degree by Research and Experimental Research: Will cover tuition fees and research allowance up to R55 000 over the first 3 consecutive years.
  • Doctoral Degree by Experimental Research: Will cover tuition fees and research allowance up to R120 000 over the first 4 consecutive years.
  • Doctoral Degree by Research: Will cover tuition fees and research allowance up to R80 000 over the first 4 consecutive years.

Important Note:

  • UNISA will only accept applications submitted via myUnisa link. No emails, or hard copy applications will be considered.
  • Students must register temporarily to activate the registration once their application is successful.
  • Master’s by Coursework students should temporarily register all the modules they wish to study for the academic year, as there won’t be another award of additional modules during that year.
  • UNISA does not guarantee awarding all the eligible students, as it is subject to the availability of funds.
  • Returning bursary awardees must re-apply every year for the bursary as per the bursary guidelines.
  • Students must read all Master’s and Doctoral Bursary Instructions before applying. This includes information related to De-registration/Claims/Refunds as well.
  • UNISA will prioritize South African students over international students for a bursary based on the 80/20 percent ratio.
  • Master’s and Doctoral students who do not have an ethical clearance certificate will only get a once-off laptop allowance from the research allowance allocated above. This will be subject to a completed research proposal and an approved application.
  • Master’s and Doctoral students will get to use the remaining balance of the research allowance if they confirm the ethical clearance certificate before 31 January each academic year. This is subject to academic performance and approved re-application.
  • The bursary will not provide funds for the following:
    • Additional years than what is mentioned above.
    • Repeating/failed modules for Master’s by Coursework students
    • Historic debt
    • Different or additional NQF Level 9/10 qualification from the one funded previously.

Eligibility Criteria

Students willing to apply for the UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary must fulfill the following criteria:

New Bursary Applicants that have never been funded by UNISA PG Bursary:

  • International and South African UNISA Master’s and Doctoral research students who have successfully submitted and passed their Research Proposal by the date 31 January 2024
  • Master’s by Coursework students who have passed their 2 coursework modules by the date 31 January 2024.
  • Master’s by Coursework students who have submitted and passed their Research Proposal by the date 31 January 2024 and also having passed all the modules and is currently doing research.

Returning PG Bursary awardees that UNISA has funded before:

  • International and South African Master’s and Doctoral UNISA students who are continuing their research study in the previously registered/funded NQF level 9/10 qualification. This is subject to their academic performance and bursary guidelines.

Who CANNOT apply for the UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary?

  • Permanent staff members of UNISA
  • First-year Master’s and Doctoral students
  • Students enrolled for non-degree purpose programmes and special study programmes such as PGCE.
  • Students who already have a PG degree at the higher or same NQF level for the registered qualification.
  • Students registered in the Graduate School of Business Leadership for:
    • Master’s of Business Leadership
    • Master’s of Business Administration
