Gibela Bursary 2024

About Gibela

Gibela, a South African and French railway rolling stock manufacturer, was founded by Ubumbano Rail, Alstom, and New Africa Rail. Alstom now holds 61% of the black-owned enterprise, with Ubumbano Rail controlling 30% and New Africa Rail that controls 9%.

Gibela had to replace the ageing metro fleet with a new modern service in 2013. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) directed them to bring 600 modern commuter passenger trains into the South African rail network over ten years.
