Gibela Bursary 2023

About Gibela

Gibela, a South African and French railway rolling stock manufacturer, was founded by Ubumbano Rail, Alstom, and New Africa Rail. Alstom now holds 61% of the black-owned enterprise, with Ubumbano Rail controlling 30% and New Africa Rail that controls 9%.

Gibela had to replace the ageing metro fleet with a new modern service in 2013. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) directed them to bring 600 modern commuter passenger trains into the South African rail network over a ten-year period.
