Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA)

The AGSA Bursary Programme is the Auditor-General of South Africa's own employer bursary for students pursuing the Chartered Accountancy (CA) route at SAICA-accredited universities. It is a full-cost award covering tuition, accommodation, meals and books, and leads directly into a training contract (articles) with AGSA after graduation, giving recipients exposure to public-sector financial reporting in addition to IFRS.

RSM South Africa (administered in-house via the RSM Education Trust)

The RSM Education Trust Bursary is a full-cost bursary funded by RSM South Africa through its in-house RSM Education Trust (established in 2016) to support Black female students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. It covers tuition, textbooks and capped allowances for accommodation and living costs, plus academic support and a potential RSM training contract on qualifying. The Trust supports students on the postgraduate accounting/CTA (CA(SA)) route as well as Information Technology and Law.

Amazon Web Services (administered by StudyTrust)

The AWS Skills Development Bursary, administered by StudyTrust, offers capped full-cost bursaries for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Commerce and selected other fields at South African universities. Awards are based on merit and financial need, with priority for students with disabilities, learners from LEAP Science and Maths Schools and former AWS interns.

Motsepe Foundation Bursary Programme

Motsepe Foundation (self-administered via the online Applicant Hub on its official website)

The Motsepe Foundation Bursary Programme, run by the foundation established by Patrice Motsepe and Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, supports academically strong but financially disadvantaged South African learners to pursue an undergraduate degree at a recognised SA tertiary institution. The 2027 call is a STEAM undergraduate bursary covering Science, Technology, Engineering, Accounting, Maths and selected Humanities (Music and LLB). It covers registration and tuition, accredited accommodation, books and a laptop, meals, a tutor allowance and mental wellness support. Applications are made through the foundation's online Applicant Hub and close on 16 October 2026.

Commonwealth Master's and PhD Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC), funded by the UK FCDO (South African candidates are nominated by the Department of Higher Education and Training)

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK funds Commonwealth citizens to study in the United Kingdom. South Africans are eligible for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarships, which fund a one-year taught Master's at a UK university, but not for the Commonwealth PhD Scholarships, which are limited to least developed and fragile countries. Funded by the UK FCDO, the Master's award covers full tuition, a monthly stipend, return airfare and other allowances for talented candidates who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. South African applicants are nominated through the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

Amount: Full scholarship (no fixed cash amount): full UK tuition + monthly stipend of GBP 1,712 (GBP 2,000 in the London area) at current rates, plus return airfare, a study travel grant and other allowances

SARB CEJ Scholarship in Economics Journalism (Rhodes University)

South African Reserve Bank Centre for Economic Journalism (SARB CEJ), funded by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) (hosted at the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies; applications administered by the Rhodes University Postgraduate Funding Office)

The SARB Centre for Economic Journalism (CEJ) offers full South African Reserve Bank scholarships for postgraduate journalism study at Rhodes University, aimed at building skills in economics and community journalism. Awards cover all course-related costs, residence accommodation and meals during term time, and a stipend for living costs, and can be held on the PG Diploma in Journalism, PG Diploma in Economics Journalism, BA Honours (Journalism) or MA (Journalism). Preference is given to female candidates from a previously disadvantaged background who originate from the Eastern Cape, though candidates from a Commerce background are also encouraged to apply. Applications for 2027 close on 23 October 2026.

Discovery Foundation Awards

Discovery Foundation

The Discovery Foundation Awards are grants for doctors and institutions in the public healthcare sector, not an undergraduate bursary. The Foundation offers five awards each year: Academic Fellowship Awards (PhD research by medical specialists), Sub-specialist Awards (HPCSA-accredited sub-specialist training) and three Rural and Underserved Areas awards (Individual, Institutional and Distinguished Visitor). Individual applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents living in South Africa; undergraduate students cannot apply.

Amount: Varies by award (2024 guide figures): R800,000 for a PhD Academic Fellowship; R1.1 million a year for Sub-specialist Awards; up to R25,000 to R500,000 for the rural and underserved areas awards

Gauteng Department of Health Bursary

Gauteng Department of Health

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) funds health training for Gauteng residents through two current programmes. The Gauteng College of Nursing (GCON) student nurse intake trains Diploma in Nursing students on a learning contract, with a monthly stipend paid by the department. The Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro (NMFC) programme sends students from disadvantaged communities to study medicine in Cuba. Applications for the GCON 2027 Student Nurse Intake close on 30 October 2026. As of 12 October 2026, the department had not published a 2027 bursary call for university health-sciences degrees such as pharmacy or physiotherapy, or a new NMFC intake.

Amount: GCON student nurses receive a monthly stipend from the department while they train (amount not published), and there are no application or admission fees. NMFC recruits are sponsored by the department to study medicine in Cuba.
