Apply free at my.nsfas.org.za or in the official NSFAS app. NSFAS received 51,474 applications in the first four days of the cycle and is urging applicants not to wait for the final week. The 2027 cycle covers first-time and returning applicants at public universities and TVET colleges.
Why some reports say 18 November
The minister’s launch speech published on gov.za said the cycle “will close on 18 November 2026”, and SAnews repeated that date in its launch report. At the same launch, NSFAS’s interim board chairperson, Adv Richardt Ramashia, said the system will close on 31 October. NSFAS’s website, its 22 September statement and later TimesLIVE and EWN reports also give 31 October, and NSFAS has ruled out an extension.
NSFAS runs the application system, so treat 31 October 2026 as the deadline. Do not plan around 18 November.

Continuing NSFAS-funded students generally do not reapply each year. NSFAS runs separate, shorter windows for some later TVET trimester intakes; none had been announced for 2027 as of 12 October 2026.
Which dates should you ignore?
- “1 September 2026 to 21 January 2027”: still shown on some websites. NSFAS never announced it.
- “Closes 31 January 2027”: an old estimate, not an NSFAS deadline.
- “18 November 2026”: in the minister’s speech, but NSFAS’s own site and board say 31 October.
- “The deadline has been extended”: no extension had been announced as of 12 October 2026.
Applying is free. Nobody can sell you a place in the queue or a later deadline.
What to do before 31 October
- 1. Sign in or register on my.nsfas.org.za or the NSFAS app with your own ID number and cellphone number.
- 2. Complete your personal and household details, then sign and upload the 2027 consent form.
- 3. Upload every document the portal asks for. Clear PDF or JPEG files of up to 20 MB each are accepted.
- 4. Press Submit and save your reference number. Saving a draft is not the same as applying.
- 5. Apply separately to a public university or TVET college. NSFAS funding does not get you a place.

- NSFAS opened its 2027 application cycle on Friday, 18 September 2026, the day Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela launched it in Johannesburg. Applications are made free of charge on myNSFAS (my.nsfas.org.za) or in the official NSFAS app.
