SASSA appeal: declined SRD R370

If SASSA declined your SRD R370 grant for a month and you disagree with the reason, you can appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). Appeal within 30 days of the rejection, for every declined month.

Required

13-digit ID number

The South African ID number of the applicant, exactly as it was used on the SRD application.

Required

Phone number used to apply

The appeal portal asks for the phone number used to submit your application. Changed numbers? Update it first.

Deadline

30 days per month

The official page says appeal within 30 days but not exceeding 90 days, and lodge a separate appeal for each rejected month.

Appeal or reapply? They are not the same

An appeal asks the Independent Tribunal to review SASSA’s decision for a specific declined month. A new application does not reverse a decline. If your status shows Cancelled rather than Declined, the route is the reinstate option on srd.sassa.gov.za, or re-applying, not an appeal. Read the reason for the month first on the official status check.

How to appeal a declined SRD R370 application

These steps follow the instructions on the official DSD appeals page. There is no fee and no document upload.

  1. 1

Read the decline reason for the month

Check the SRD status on srd.sassa.gov.za. Each month has its own result and reason.

  2. 2

Check your details are complete and correct

The official page asks you to double check the information reflected on the appeal platform and to update your contact number where necessary, because a successful appeal is paid to the details SASSA holds.

  3. 3

    Open the official appeals page

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals and click the link to lodge an appeal or check an appeal status.

  4. 4

Enter your ID number and phone number

Type the applicant’s 13-digit South African ID number and the phone number used to submit the application.

  5. 5

    Appeal every declined month

Lodge an appeal for each month that was rejected. You or your proxy must confirm that you have read and accepted the Declaration and Consent documents.

  6. 6

Submit and wait for the confirmation message

Click Submit and look out for the message on the page that your application was submitted successfully.

  7. 7

    Track the outcome

Check your appeal status on the same page. The tribunal aims to finalise appeals within 60 to 90 days and sends the outcome and reasons electronically.

Why SRD applications are declined, and what to do

SASSA checks each month against Home Affairs, banks, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, SOCPEN and government payroll databases. The tribunal revalidates the same databases when it considers an appeal.

Reason shownWhat it meansWhat to do
Personal details do not match Home AffairsThe name, surname, ID number or other details you entered differ from the Department of Home Affairs record.Check every detail against your ID document. If the SASSA record is wrong, lodge an appeal for the declined month.
Identity verification required or failedSASSA suspects fraud, or the contact or banking details on the application look incorrect, so it wants proof that you are the applicant.Respond to the SASSA verification SMS link within 72 hours, verify on srd.sassa.gov.za or visit a SASSA local office. Then check the status again.
Alternative income source identified (means test)Money received into your bank account in that month was above the income threshold, which DSD set at R624 per month in 2022.If the money was not income for you, or the record is wrong, appeal for that month. The tribunal re-checks the bank data before deciding.
UIF registeredYour ID number appears on the Unemployment Insurance Fund database as contributing to or eligible for UIF.If you are not receiving UIF, ask the Department of Employment and Labour about your UIF record, then appeal the declined month.
Registered at SARS for PAYE or receiving an incomeSARS records show you as registered for employee tax or receiving an income, which SASSA treats as a source of support. If you are no longer employed, appeal and let the tribunal revalidate the record. Do not submit a fresh application instead.
Existing SASSA grant, NSFAS or government payrollYou were matched on SOCPEN (another social grant in your own name), NSFAS or the Persal or Persol government payroll systems. The SRD grant is not paid to people receiving another grant for themselves. Appeal only if the match is wrong.
Age outside 18 to 60The SRD grant is only for applicants between 18 and 60 years old. There is no basis for an appeal. Older persons can apply for the Older Persons Grant through SASSA.
Grant cancelledThis is not a decline. A cancelled grant has been stopped, for example after a fraud review.Use the reinstate option on srd.sassa.gov.za or re-apply. An appeal is for a declined month, not a cancellation.

What the tribunal checks

ITSAA is mandated under section 18 of the Social Assistance Act to reassess SASSA’s decision against the qualifying criteria in the SRD regulations. It re-checks the databases SASSA used, including bank verification of insufficient means, for the month you appealed.

If the appeal succeeds, the tribunal directs SASSA to pay you directly, which is why your contact details must be current.

After a successful appeal

Approval for a month and the money arriving are separate steps. Keep checking the SRD status for a pay date, then confirm the balance with your bank or Postbank.

Appeals for other SASSA grants

Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency and Grant-in-Aid decisions do not go through the SRD portal. They follow the two-stage process in the Social Assistance Act.

1. Ask SASSA to reconsider

If a grant is not approved, or is awarded only for a temporary period, you have the right to ask SASSA to reconsider. This must be done within 90 days of being informed of the outcome. You can also ask a SASSA official to explain the reasons.

2. Appeal to the Independent Tribunal

If the reconsidered decision is still unfavourable, you may appeal to the Independent Tribunal within 90 days of receiving the reconsidered outcome. DSD publishes the appeal form and an ITSAA condonation form for late appeals.

The tribunal’s contact email on the official appeals page is [email protected]. For general help, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

Protect your appeal

  • Lodge appeals only on srd.sassa.gov.za. Third-party “appeal services” cannot speed up a tribunal decision.
  • Never pay anyone to lodge or “approve” an appeal. The official process is free.
  • Do not share a bank PIN, card PIN or one-time password with anyone offering to help.
  • Do not keep changing your banking details or contact number while an appeal is pending. SASSA says this delays payment.

SASSA appeal questions

How long do I have to appeal a declined SRD R370 application?

The official DSD appeals page says you may appeal SASSA’s decision to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals within a period of 30 days but not exceeding 90 days. It advises lodging the appeal as soon as you receive the rejected notification.

How long does a SASSA SRD appeal take?

The Independent Tribunal aims to finalise an appeal within 60 to 90 days from the date the appeal was received and informs the appellant of the outcome and the reasons electronically. You can also check the appeal status on the official appeals page.

Do I need to appeal every month I was declined?

Yes. The SRD grant is re-evaluated and paid monthly, so an appeal must be lodged for each month you were rejected. A tribunal decision applies only to the month appealed. If you do not appeal a month, the original decision stands for it.

Should I reapply or appeal?

If a month shows Declined and you disagree with the reason, appeal. A new application does not reverse a decline. If your grant shows Cancelled, use the reinstate option on srd.sassa.gov.za or re-apply, because an appeal is not the route for a cancellation.

What happens if my appeal is declined?

The Independent Tribunal’s decision is final and there is no further internal recourse. The official page says an appellant who is not satisfied may approach the High Court for judicial review under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act within 180 days.

How do I appeal an Older Persons, Disability or Child Support Grant decision?

First ask SASSA to reconsider the decision within 90 days of being informed of the outcome. If the reconsidered decision is still unfavourable, you may appeal to the Independent Tribunal within 90 days of receiving it. DSD publishes the appeal form and a condonation form on dsd.gov.za.

Will All Bursaries lodge my appeal?

No. All Bursaries is an independent guide and does not collect ID numbers or application details. Lodge your appeal only on the official srd.sassa.gov.za appeals page, or call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 if you need help.

Independent guide: All Bursaries is not SASSA, DSD or the Independent Tribunal and cannot lodge or decide an appeal. Enter your ID or phone number only on an official sassa.gov.za or dsd.gov.za page. Sources were checked on 18 September 2026; follow newer instructions shown on the official portal.
