W&RSETA Bursary Scheme
The W&RSETA Bursary Scheme funds South African students pursuing wholesale and retail sector qualifications at universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges, with priority given to scarce and critical skills in the sector. It targets students with financial need (the 'missing middle') and supports both unemployed and employed/workplace-based learners. - Who can apply for the W&RSETA Bursary Scheme?
- The scheme funds South African citizens studying full-time towards wholesale and retail sector qualifications at recognised universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges, with priority to scarce/priority skills and students with financial need (the 'missing middle'). Importantly, individual students do not apply directly - applications are made on their behalf by approved institutions, W&RSETA levy-paying employers, Retail Chairs or bursary administrators through the W&RSETA Stakeholder Portal.
- What does the W&RSETA bursary cover?
- Depending on the relevant Memorandum of Agreement, the bursary can cover tuition and registration fees, accommodation, a book/learning material allowance, stationery, meals, transport, an electronic device/laptop allowance and academic support. There is no single fixed published amount - benefits vary by qualification, institution and agreement.
- When are the W&RSETA bursary deadlines?
- This is an annual scheme with project-specific windows. For 2026, new/main bursary applications closed on 16 January 2026, while the continuing (unemployed) bursary window closes on 30 May 2026, with award letters expected by 30 June 2026. Windows recur each academic year, so always check the official W&RSETA Bursaries page for the live cycle.

- No. The scheme funds both unemployed and employed/workplace-based students across its different project streams. The continuing window currently open is for unemployed bursars who were funded by W&RSETA in 2025, passed at least 60% of their modules and are progressing to the next level of their qualification in 2026.
