Understanding Your Application Status
These are NWU's own status names and explanations, as published on studies.nwu.ac.za.
📝 Created
All applicants
You have started your application but have not yet submitted it. NWU automatically cancels applications still in this status at the closing date ("Web Cancellation"), and they can no longer be submitted.
📋 Waiting for Approval
All applicants
Your application has been submitted successfully and is waiting to be processed.
📄 Subject to Outstanding Documents
All applicants
NWU cannot evaluate your application until it has all the required supporting documents. Read the letter NWU sent you and upload the outstanding documents on the application portal as soon as possible.
🔍 Subject to Faculty Evaluation
All applicants
The relevant faculty is reviewing your application and makes the final decision. You will be notified once there is an outcome.
⏳ Subject to Final Grade 12 Results
Undergraduate only
Based on your results so far you meet the admission requirements, but your offer is only confirmed once NWU has evaluated your official final Grade 12 results. A conditional offer does not guarantee admission.
🎯 Subject to Selection Process
Undergraduate only
You meet the minimum admission requirements, but final admission depends on the selection process for your programme (for example Law, Engineering, Music or Urban and Regional Planning).
✅ Conditionally Accepted
Postgraduate only
You have been accepted subject to faculty-specific conditions that must be met before admission is confirmed.
🎉 Accepted
All applicants
You have met all the admission requirements and have officially been accepted to study at NWU.
❌ Unsuccessful
All applicants
Your application for this academic year was not successful, because of capacity constraints or academic reasons. NWU states that the admission decision is final and no appeals are allowed.
Cancelling an application: you can opt out by logging in and choosing "Application Opt-Out". NWU warns that a cancelled application is permanently deleted, the administration fee is not refunded, any residence allocation is forfeited, and you pay the fee again if you reapply.

Administration fee: R150 for South African applicants and R600 for international applicants, non-refundable and payable online only. Compare other universities on our application dates page.
Outcomes and Registration
Once you have accepted a final offer, NWU says you register on the NWU Student Portal with your login credentials. Registration happens in phases, with first-year students first. Missed the deadline? NWU refers applicants to the government's Central Application Service (CAS).

💡 Application Tips
- • Check your status and your email regularly; NWU sends its letters to the address you applied with
- • If your status is "Subject to Outstanding Documents", upload what is missing straight away
- • You cannot change your course after applying, so choose your two options carefully
- • NWU does not accept late applications, so apply early next cycle (applications open on 1 June)
- • Use your own email address: one email address may only be used by one applicant
- • Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission
- • Apply for NSFAS or a bursary separately: NWU says NSFAS operates independently

How do I check my NWU application status?
Go to studies.nwu.ac.za/studies/apply and click "Apply now!" to open the NWU application portal. On the Start Your Application screen click "Application Login", and log in with your 8-digit university number and PIN. Your application and its status show on the Application and Admission screen.
I forgot my NWU PIN or university number. What do I do?
For a forgotten PIN, open the portal, click "Application Login" and select "PIN Forgotten". For a forgotten university number, click "Forgotten University Number" on the Start Your Application screen and confirm your contact details; NWU sends your 8-digit number to you. What does "Subject to Final Grade 12 Results" mean at NWU?
NWU says it means that, based on your results so far, you meet the admission requirements for your chosen qualification, but your final offer will only be confirmed once NWU has evaluated your official final Grade 12 results. A conditional offer does not guarantee admission.
When did NWU applications for 2027 close?
NWU opened 2027 applications on 1 June 2026. Selection courses closed on 30 June 2026 (Engineering and Urban and Regional Planning on 31 August 2026), and general courses and residence applications closed on 31 August 2026. Master's and doctoral applications close on 30 November 2026.
Does NWU accept late applications?
No. NWU's FAQ says it does not accept late applications and refers applicants who missed the deadline to the government's Central Application Service (CAS).
How long does NWU take to give feedback?
NWU does not give a fixed timeline; its FAQ says "We work to respond as soon as possible." For Law, NWU says selection results are made known before or by the end of August. Offers that are subject to final Grade 12 results are confirmed after the final results are evaluated.
How do I apply for NWU residence after getting an offer?
Select "Yes" for residence when you apply. If you receive a conditional offer, log on to the application portal, go to the "Application Status" bar, click "Show Interest in Residence" and apply. Residence applications closed with general applications on 31 August 2026.
