NSFAS’s latest funding policy is its 2026 Bursary Guidelines (Annexure A, updated May 2026), which say allowance amounts are published annually. NSFAS had not released 2027 guidelines or amounts as of 12 October 2026. Allowances are only paid once you are funded and registered.
Which allowance categories may apply?
Your package depends on your institution, registration, living arrangement and other eligibility rules. These categories come from NSFAS’s 2026 bursary guidelines; they are not a promise that every student receives every item.
University students
- One learning-material allowance per academic year
- Living allowance for students not in catered residences
- Accommodation or transport, not both
- Distance students taking under 60% of a full credit load get the learning-material allowance only
TVET college students
- Personal care allowance, plus a living allowance for students not in catered residences
- Accommodation or transport, not both
- Distance TVET students get the personal care allowance only
- Occupational-programme students qualify only if in simulated training
Students with disabilities may also get approved support such as assistive devices and, at universities, human support. This is assessed and approved; it is not automatic.

Missing-middle loan
Registration and tuition fees, learning materials and accommodation where applicable. It does not cover living, personal-care or transport allowances, and it must be repaid.
How to check your allowance and payment

Sign in at my.nsfas.org.za or in the official NSFAS app and look for funding details, notices or an action request.

Ask your institution
Confirm that your registration data is complete and ask the financial-aid office which allowance categories and payment route apply to you.

Confirm banking instructions through an official route
Do not submit bank details through a link from an unknown message. Follow only the instruction inside myNSFAS, from your institution or on nsfas.org.za.

Escalate with evidence
If payment is late, keep your status, registration confirmation and prior case reference ready when contacting NSFAS.
Allowance late or missing?
Payment depends on accurate registration data and processing by your university, TVET college or approved payment channel. A delay at one institution does not prove that every NSFAS payment is late.

- Ask whether your institution submitted and verified your registration data.
- Confirm that the payment details requested through the official route are complete.
- Contact NSFAS if the institution cannot resolve the issue.

- How much is the NSFAS allowance for 2027?
- NSFAS had not published its 2027 allowance amounts as of 12 October 2026. Its 2026 guidelines say allowance amounts are published annually, so any exact 2027 monthly figure you see before NSFAS releases them is an estimate, not a confirmed rate.
- What are the NSFAS payment dates for 2027?
- The 2027 payment schedule has not been announced. NSFAS says allowances start once your institution confirms your registration and your funding is confirmed, and that payment dates are set with your institution.
- Does every NSFAS student get the same allowances?
- No. The allowances depend on whether you study at a university or TVET college, where you live, whether you study by distance and whether you have a disability. Students qualify for either an accommodation or a transport allowance, not both.
- Does the NSFAS missing-middle loan pay allowances?
- Only some. NSFAS’s FAQ says the loan can cover registration and tuition fees, learning materials and accommodation where applicable, but not a living allowance, personal care or transport.
- Where can I check my own NSFAS allowance?
- Check notices and funding details in your myNSFAS account, then confirm the payment schedule with your institution’s financial-aid office. For account, payment or balance enquiries, NSFAS lists 08000 67327 and [email protected].
